Men’s Large Crochet Beanie Pattern
A few weeks ago we were at one of the last farmers markets of the season – I know kind of sad. We had a wonderful couple come by our booth and ask if I could do custom sized hats. Well, of course I can. He graciously let me measure his head (a couple of times) so I could get the sizing right. What he wanted was a very simple single colored beanie. Easy peasy right….Except I didn’t have a pattern that would exactly fit him. I needed to revamp my basic men’s large crochet beanie pattern.
Here are the results:
Men’s Large Crochet Beanie Pattern
FINISHED SIZES:
Instructions given fit size large; changes for X-large are noted.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS:
Circumference: 22 1/2ish inches (large) [24ish inches (X-large)], with 2-3 inches of stretch
Length: 7ish inches (large) [8ish inches (X-large)]
MATERIALS:
• Red Heart Soft Yarn (weight medium 4, 100% acrylic, 5 oz, 256 yd) in your choice of color, I used black for this particular project
• Size H/8/5mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge, I use Boye hooks (because I like how easy they are to find and they feel goo in my hand)
• Tapestry needle or yarn needle for weaving in ends
PATTERN NOTES:
We will be working in double crochet for the entire project.
Double Crochet = DC
Slip Stitch = SS
Chain = CH

Start with a magic ring, if you need to learn how to do this, please watch this quick video.
Round 1: Magic ring, chain 2 (this will count as a double crochet) DC 11 more times in circle. Pull circle tight, slip stitch into top of ch 2. (12 DC)
Round 2: Chain 2, DC in same space as ch, 2 DC in each stitch all the way around. SS into top of ch 2 space. (24 DC)
Round 3: CH 2, DC in same space as ch, *DC in next space, 2DC in next space* repeat this all the way around. SS into top of CH 2 space. (36 DC)
Round 4: CH 2, DC in same space as ch, *DC in next 2 spaces, 2DC in next space* repeat this all the way around. SS into top of CH 2 space. (48 DC)
Round 5: CH 2, DC in same space as ch, *DC in next 3 spaces, 2DC in next space* repeat this all the way around. SS into top of CH 2 space. (60 DC)
For EXTRA LARGE:
Round 6: CH 2, DC in same space as ch, *DC in next 4 spaces, 2DC in next space* repeat this all the way around. SS into top of CH 2 space. (72 DC)
For BOTH SIZES of the men’s large crochet beanie pattern:
Round 7 – 15 CH 2, DC in same space as ch, DC in each space all the way around. SS into top of CH 2 space. (60 DC) [72 DC for extra large]
Fasten off and weave in ends.
*Note men’s large crochet beanie pattern will start at round 6 with single DC in each space for a total of 9 single DC rounds.
